Tossing a chunk of castle battlement from hand to hand, King stood and surveyed the castle ruins with a wide grin. "Here it is, Skid," she announced to her venipede, who was hiding timidly behind her leg, "Ragnar Castle. Or, what's left of it I guess."
She had heard about the remains of the castle from her mother, when she used to tell stories to help her fall asleep. 'The corpse of a castle, picked clean by vandals,' her mother used to say. 'The only things left standing are the doors. And scrawled across each door the words, 'open for none save the one that saveth all.'' And of course, there was tell of lost spirits, evil and good both, and people who had gone missing in or near the abandoned structure. Even as a young child, King brushed these warnings aside, interested only in the talk of, as she interpreted, a savior for all of Lualdi.
King threw her makeshift ball straight up a few times, before finally giving it a final lob, out over the fallen structure, where it landed with a quiet thunk. She glanced down at her venipede and motioned for him to follow. "C'mon, Skid. Those doors won't open themselves, you know? Gotta get 'the savior of all' to do it." She sniffled and wiped at her dripping nose. "Yup. That's me."
King starts up the slope towards the ruins, commenting as she goes, "'sides, maybe we'll see a ghost or two while we're here. Wouldn't that be cool!"
Skid, shivering with fear, did not seem to agree. However, he skittered obediently after his trainer, and the two of them picked their way through the debris towards the nearest visible door, King adjusting her gloves as they went. This was gonna be good.
