A breeze stroked the landscape.
Then another.
A small cloud of dust formed in its wake, rapidly dispersing over the barren land.
Somewhere in the distance, a basement door opened.

His stubbles colored orange from the cheese powder, eyes blinking furiously to adjust to the sudden change in light, Leonard stepped up the staircase from the basement he'd been living in for the last one too many years. His back ached, fittingly. He had been sitting for three days straight, not counting the two times a day he'd walked up those same stairs to eat. This time, however, he wasn't on schedule, for the sole reason that he wasn't coming for food. He was coming to save.
"Is that you, honey?" His expression of utter determination wasn't affected by his mother calling. If anything, it made his eyes narrower, his stride faster, and his clutch around his PC bag tighter.
"Yes. The time, if any, is now. There is two and a half year until the apocalypse, and I want to do mine to help stop it. If you don't see me by then, assume something's happened. Farewell."
With those being his final words, he slammed the now open door shut behind him, and stared out into the city he called his home. No, to the region he called his home. And no way a person of such a superior intellect and morality like him would just let that all go to ruin. Especially considering he himself was on the stake as well. Eyes set on the horizon, leonard ventured off to wherever it would make sense to go to save the world.
